How to Select the Right Pump for Your Application

Start with the fluid
What is being pumped — clean water, dirty water, chemicals, slurry? The fluid determines the materials of construction, the seal arrangement and whether a standard centrifugal unit is even appropriate. Never assume one pump type fits all duties.
Quantify the duty
Two numbers drive pump selection: the flow rate you need and the total head the pump must overcome — the vertical lift plus friction losses through pipework and fittings. Underestimating head is one of the most common selection mistakes, and it shows up as a pump that "runs but does not deliver".
Respect the installation environment
A pump for a clean plant room has very different requirements from one bolted to a skid on a construction site. Dust, moisture, flooding risk and available space all influence the choice between submersible, surface and vertical installations.
Consider the duty cycle
A pump running continuously needs more conservative selection than one used intermittently. Continuous duty raises the importance of bearing life, cooling and seal quality — and makes preventive maintenance scheduling non-negotiable.
Check the power supply
Confirm the available electrical supply before specifying the motor: voltage, phase and the capacity of the supply. An otherwise perfect pump paired with an inadequate supply is a repeat site problem.
